The Gulf giants registered a massive 101-run win over Dubai Capitals in the eighth match of the International League (ILT20) 2023 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday, 19 January. This huge win helped the giants to climb to the top of the points table after winning their first three matches so far.
The defeat however pushed the Capitals down to fourth position in the eight-team table and they will have to work really hard to rectify from here as the competition progresses.
While the bowlers tried their level best to restrict the Giants to a manageable score on a good batting surface, the Dubai-based franchise was completely let down by the batsmen who failed to put up a concerted performance in the second innings.
Dubai Capitals captain Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to bowl first. Despite losing opener Rehan Ahmed early, the pair of captain James Vince and Chris Lynn added 82 runs for the second wicket. While Vince continued his purple patch, Lynn played a perfect second fiddle to this partnership and scored 25 runs.
James Vince scored 76 off 48 balls and Shimron Hetmyer added the finishing touch with an unbeaten 37 off 19 balls as the Gulf giants posted 181/6 on the board. Akif Raja (2/23) and Isuru Udana (2/41) were the bowlers for Dubai.
Dubai Capitals floundered in their run chase
In reply, Dubai Capitals’ illustrious batting line-up never got going and quick wickets derailed their chase right from the start. The Dubai batsmen failed to hit the smallest of boundaries at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium as the Gulf giants’ bowlers did not give them any batting stunner.
Only England Test icon Joe Root (20) and Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka (23) showed some resistance in what was otherwise a miserable scorecard for the Capitals as most of their batters went back to single digit scores.
Even captain Rovman Powell could not display his power hitting skills as he was sent back to the dugout without troubling the scorers. Dubai Capitals were eventually bowled out for just 80 runs in the 15th over and this humiliating loss did some irreparable damage to their overall net run rate.
Veteran all-rounders David Wiese and Chris Jordan starred for the Gulf giants with three scalps each.

Is there anything more to James Vince than top scoring in a non-statistical competition? His T20 record is really good TBF

James Vince is a classic player. Would love to see him at CWC 2023
