Shastri suggested that Kohli should pull out of the last ODI against New Zealand and return to first-class cricket to prepare for the much-awaited four-match Test series against Australia, as the dashing right-hander is yet to return to his team. Speaking for Star Sports during the first ODI between India and New Zealand in Hyderabad, Ravi Shastri said: I always believe you play more first-class cricket, especially when you are going to play a lot in India. It just seems the top players don’t play enough first-class cricket.”

He added, “There are so many crickets around, you might not want to take the risk. But sometimes you have to be smart and give up some games to look at the bigger picture. And the bigger picture is Australia.”

The former coach also cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar, who did exactly the same thing 25 years ago. Shastri says, “25 years ago, Sachin Tendulkar went to play in the CCI against the Australian team and scored a double century. Two months later in 1998 against Australia he had 1000 runs in all formats.

Commentator signed off saying, “He got a great double century and Australia knew the writing was on the wall if they didn’t get the guy early.”

It was noted that Kohli’s home side Delhi is scheduled to play a 2022-23 Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad from January 24 and he could use the playing time to get back to his best in Test cricket.
