On the eve of the 74th Republic Day, the Government of India announced that SRD Prasad, Sanathoba Sharma and Gurcharan Singh will be conferred with the Padma Shri. The likes of Kalaripayattu master SRD Prasad, Thang Ta Guru K Sanathoba Sharma, former cricketer and veteran cricket coach Gurcharan Singh will be honored with the Padma Shri for their distinguished services in the field of sports. The President of India on Wednesday approved the awarding of 106 Padma awards, three of which were given to sportspersons.
Awards are given in various disciplines and activities such as arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, commerce and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service.
‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished services; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for outstanding service of high quality and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in a particular field.
The award is announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. The awards are presented by the President of India at a formal ceremony usually held in March and April every year at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
