India got a great win against hosts South Africa Tripartite series Despite opener Harmanpreet Kaur being unavailable for the clash at Buffalo Park. The visitors sealed a 27-run victory after an indispensable partnership between Deepti Sharma and debutant Amanjot Kaur rescued their side from a precarious position in the first innings. The latter was adjudged Man of the Match for his brilliant 41 off just 30 deliveries in the first innings, which took India to a competitive 147-run lead.
Chasing a tough target, the home side lost Laura Olvard to Deepti Sharma in the second over. Anneke Bosh’s miserable stint at the crease also ended in no time. But veteran Marijan Kapp and Proteas captain Sune Luus threatened to counter-attack. But Cap fell trying to increase the scoring rate as India began to tighten their grip on the match.
Batting on the surface was not easy, and Smriti Mandhana, who captained in Harmanpreet Kaur’s absence, had a plethora of slower bowling options at her disposal to stop the opposition batsmen in their tracks. The Indian ground fielding that day was excellent and after some smart work by Rajeswari Gaikwad they managed to run out the Protea skipper.
It was a rally as the Indian spinners took wickets at regular intervals to stem the flow of runs, eventually completing a comfortable win for the Asian side. Deepti Sharma, who played the role of finisher earlier in the match, showed her all-round brilliance after taking three wickets with the ball to derail the Proteas’ chase.
Amanjot Kaur on debut for the audience
Earlier, the visitors were batted first by South African captain Sune Luwes on a sticky surface at Buffalo Park. The Indian team, who were without their influential skipper Harmanpreet Kaur due to illness, was stunned by the early dismissal of Indian opener Smriti Mandhana in the third over of the match.
In the first ten overs of the match, wickets kept falling from one end as Yastika Bhatia struggled alone. The Asian team was in a poor position with the scoreboard reading 69/5 in the 12th over. South Africa threatened to bowl out the visitors for a moderate score before all-rounder Deepti Sharma and debutant Amanjot Kaur battled through the Protea bowlers.
The pair added a quick stand of 76 for the sixth wicket, with Kaur aggressively leveling India’s score at 147 on a wicket that was more than enough for the slower bowlers.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the Indian team’s clinical performance against South Africa:
