Pearl Royals and Pretoria Capitals locked horns in 18m match SA20 2023 League at Boland Park in Parle. Less than 24 hours before the game, Royals MI lost by 12 runs against Cape Town and were desperately waiting for a win. The Capitals were coming off a win from their previous game, but were unable to continue their momentum as the Royals won.
Pretoria Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first. They did not get off to the desired start as Will Jacks got out in the first over. Bjorn Fortuin was again at his best with the new ball and managed to give his side an early breakthrough. Theunis de Bruyne and Kusal Mendis then steered the innings and embarked on the powerplay.
The duo added 52 runs for the second wicket partnership before Ferisco Adams dismissed Mendis. Adams picked up his second wicket when he returned to bowl for 11 runsm Over, and Riley dismisses Rossow. The middle-order batsmen couldn’t do much, but De Bruyne’s half-century helped the Capitals finish at 158/6 at the end of their allotted 20-over quota.
Jos Buttler, David Miller work for Royals
The Pearl Royals started their chase brilliantly. Wihan Lubbe opened with regular opener Jason Roy and the two put on a 48-run partnership before Roy was dismissed at the end of the powerplay. Lubbe returned to the pavilion as Adil Rashid sent him packing. Dane Vilas and Jos Buttler took the game forward and added some crucial runs by sharing a 65-run stand for the third wicket.
A change in bowling has done wonders for the Capitals. Will Jacques took charge of the ball for 16 runsm over, and struck twice in his first three deliveries to dismiss Vilas and Buttler. While the former batsman returned with 24 off 26 deliveries, Buttler managed to score 37 off 28 deliveries, but quick wickets helped the Capitals turn the tide of the game.
The game came down to the wire with Royals needing 20 runs to win in the last two overs. Skipper David Miller displayed some fine skills with the bat and got down to business as soon as he entered the game. He continued to find gaps at regular intervals and sent the ball over the fence, and Mitchell van Buren scored the winning runs for Royals as they secured a thrilling victory in the final over, with just two balls to spare.
