Wasim Zafar thinks that the Indian batsmen including the captain Rohit SharmaAfter a big innings failure in the first ODI against New Zealand, more responsibility will be taken. Batting first, India scored 349 runs on the back of Shubman Gill’s 208 runs. Despite scoring big, the Indian side survived the blush with a narrow 12-run win after Michael Bracewell’s valiant century.
Rohit started well but failed to convert a good start into a big knock when he attempted an aerial shot in the first match in Hyderabad. He scored 34 off 38 balls while Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan failed to reach double figures. Suryakumar Yadav continued to struggle in ODIs and Hardik Pandya scored 28 off 38 balls before being bowled out after a controversial decision by the officials.
Ahead of the second ODI in Raipur, Zafar said that Rohit, Ishan and Suryakumar will have to shoulder more responsibility. He feels that Hardik was unlucky with his dismissal in the first match but the star all-rounder needs to be more consistent.
“Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav will have to take over. Even Hardik Pandya, although he was a bit unlucky with the way he got out in the first match,” Wasim Zafar told ESPNcricinfo.
It’s been a long time since Rohit scored a century in ODI cricket: Wasim Zafar
Focusing on Rohit’s struggles, the former India batsman noted that the current Indian skipper is batting well but it has been a long time since he scored a century in ODIs. Rohit’s last international century in white-ball cricket came in January 2021, as he has struggled with consistency and injury issues of late.
“The other three must step up. It’s been a long time since we have seen a century from Rohit in ODI cricket. He is batting well but we haven’t seen triple figures from him”, Wasim Zafar added. .
Rohit is closing in on the 10,000-run milestone with 29 ODI centuries, including three double tons, but approaching 36 years of age, staying at the top of the game won’t be easy.
