The Leafs Nation: Anthony Stewart and Nick Alberg on what Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander’s next contract might look like. (Nylander will be a UFA next season)
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Alberg: “I was watching the night of the broadcast. You guessed Eric Lindros’ number for David Pastrnak’s new contract, 8×11. Now do William Nylander. What will that next deal look like?
Stewart: “Uuuuu. Is it going to be Toronto? Is it going to be Toronto? That’s the question. The Nylanderthals, hopefully, they’re not listening.
But again, what do you say, he fed a lot of people a lot of crow because some people out there questioned the deal. Questioning him to sit for that extended period, I think back in late November.
It’s probably one of the most valuable contracts in the league and now he’s headed for superstar status. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in the All-Star Game. I know I’ll be watching in the Root Bear stands, but he’s been playing some great, great hockey for the Maple Leafs, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him score 40 goals and 100 points.
You do the math on that. Whether in Toronto or wherever, he’s a $10 million player. So he earned it.
And I think the main thing for his game this year, he’s a leader. He’s stepping up in big moments. He is going to the net. He is becoming more consistent. He has a little bit more urgency and a little bit of a big motor this year. And I think that was a little bit of a frustrating part with some coaches where he didn’t bring it every shift. Very, very talented player. He works hard but he is more consistent with it.
So it’s great to see, because when he’s on, it just adds another element.”
