There are ducks John KlingbergAs of its no-trade list, he’s waiting as trade bait

Lisa Dillman of the Wheeler Daily News: John Klingberg signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the Anaheim Ducks last offseason and is well aware that he’s trade bait.

“I know I’m going to be trade bait too. See what happens. I will take it day by day. I’m just watching my own game. I’m not happy with the way I played here. A lot different than I thought.”

Klingberg said he gave his 10-team no-trade list to the Ducks about four or five days before Jan. 1 when his no-movement clause was set to expire. He is looking for a chance to win or prove himself to play a big role.

NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers Must Be Active at Trade Deadline

Those on pending RFAs one year after becoming UFAs

Gord Miller: Twitter threads of players who are pending restricted free agents, how they have a major qualifying offer and are a year away from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

is on this year’s list Timo Mayer (SJ, $10m QO) Alex DeBrincat (OTT, $9m QO), Pierre-Luc Dubois (WPG, $6m QO) and Jasper Bratt (NJ, $5.5m QO). In the case of Meier and DeBrincat, the trade scenario may involve a long extension followed by a pre-agreed trade.

These “sign and trade” situations can go away at the deadline, but are more likely to happen in the off-season, which was the case with the Tkachuk deal. Sign and trades make sense, as the team trading the player is the only one they can give him to an eight-year contract.

If any of these players get a one-year deal, they could look like a monster UFA class in the summer of 2024, which could include (ages as of July 1, 2024): Auston Matthews (26), Sebastian Aho (26), William Nylander (28), Mark Scheifele (31) and Connor Hellebuyck (31).
