Brisbane Heat 188 for 4 (Hine 73*, Pearson 57*) lost Melbourne Stars 184 for 3 (Rodgers 41, Stoinis 36*) for four runs
Brisbane Heat’s late-season surge towards the BBL final continued with a thrilling four-run win over Melbourne Stars at the Gabba.
Last-placed Stars needed 44 runs off 14 deliveries before Cartwright and Stoinis both took full toss catches that were correctly ruled over the waist.
The pair hit sixes and fours to set up the last-ball showdown. Johnson keeps Stoinis calm with a perfect yorker.
The Heat can now clinch a top-five finals position on 13 points with a win over the Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston on Wednesday. Depending on the outcome, the table is that tight end could miss the third or even the final.
Star opener Tom Rogers sped off with a 20-ball 41 to chase down the visitors’ total in an innings that included three huge sixes down the leg side.
Earlier, Hayne and Pearson combined for 55 for 4 in the seventh over and took their partnership to perfection with 30 runs in two power surge overs.
Pearson, playing his 101st BBL game for the Heat, was on the wicket when Hayne unleashed a wide shot with reverse ramp for six. It was a rescue mission that could yet prove decisive in securing a heat play final.
England international Luke Wood came out breathing fire and brimstone in a terrific opening spell for the Stars.
He blasted Josh Brown and Marnus Labuschagne in his first two overs and almost got Matt Renshaw with the first ball. Renshaw was dismissed for 7 after playing against mid-off Adam Zampa and lost.
