In the post-match press conference, Mohammed Shami was asked if he felt India was better prepared in the bowling department for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

“I don’t think people have any doubts about the team’s ability. The team has given very good results in the last 4 to 6 years,” replied a somewhat disappointed Shami.

He also said that the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be held in India in October-November, is still a long way off and India may try out more players before finalizing the squad for the marquee tournament.

“For the World Cup, there is still time. We have many series for more players to try. It is better to take it match by match,” he said.

Mohammed Shami was also asked what kind of role he sees himself playing in 50-over cricket for India.

“I see myself working in the same role. I have been playing the same role since the day I came. I try and make sure I stay in the same role (laughs). I want to stay as fit as possible and contribute to the team in big ICC tournaments,” he replied.

The second ODI of the three-match series between the Men in Blue and the Black Caps at the Shaheed Bir Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur was the first international match played at the venue. Talking about his playing experience, he said,

“I have played Ranji Trophy and IPL here before. All in all, the wicket here is good. It was a bit damp today. It was important for the team to get off to a good start. All the bowlers maintained good lines and lengths and the result is in front of you.”
