Irfan Pathan believes that Shardul Thakur will be one of India’s seamers at the World Cup later this year.
The Men in Blue bowled out New Zealand for 295 to win the third and final ODI by 90 runs in Indore on Tuesday, thanks in large part to Shardul, whose figures were 3-45 in six overs (January 24). Rohit Sharma And Shubman Gill’s opening-wicket stand of 212 earlier helped the hosts reach a mammoth total of 385-9.
During an interview on Star Sports program “Match Point”, Pathan was asked about his views on fast bowlers due to Shardul Thakur’s performance in the last ODI, and he replied:
“If you ask Shardul, you will get first place. He bowled very well. He is a trier; He keeps trying. When you watch him, you always think he doesn’t have that kind of swing or 140-plus steady speed, but he’s always in your face. And he wants to keep taking wickets.
“Shardul Thakur should be in those players’ squad”: Irfan Pathan
Irfan Pathan predicted that the think tank would quickly gain access to a huge pool of bowlers, noting:
“You want more players like him in the team. With him, especially when discussing the World Cup, you have to have at least six or seven team combinations in your back pocket.”
Pathan elaborated on his belief that Shardul’s ability to contribute with the bat will keep him in the mix:
“If you ask me this specific question about Shardul Thakur, he should definitely be in the group of players who would raise their hands and say that they should feature in the World Cup as well.”
Shardul not only took three wickets in the last ODI against New Zealand, but also made an effective contribution of 25 off 17 balls in India’s innings. After India lost a couple of quick wickets, he put on a 54-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Hardik Pandya.
