There was a controversial dismissal off the 4th ball of the 40th over, which was bowled by Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell pitched outside the off-stump to a good length ball to Hardik and the all-rounder tried to play the ball well, but the extra bounce meant he missed it completely. The ball went into wicket-keeper Tom Latham’s gloves, bail was also dismissed and it looked like Hardik was out.

New Zealand applied for bold out. The decision went up and the third umpire ruled in New Zealand’s favor and declared Hardik bowled out by Mitchell. Notably, the replay clearly showed that the ball went over the stumps and the bails were blown by wicket-keeper Tom Latham’s gloves.

Later in the innings, the Kiwi captain and wicket-keeper, Latham, came into the limelight again after Gill accidentally canceled the bails while playing a cut shot and the decision went upstairs.

Shubman Gill’s cut shot proves why Hardik was clearly not out – Ravichandran Ashwin

Veteran off-spinner Ashwin was clearly disappointed with the third umpire’s poor decision and he said on Twitter that Shubman Gill’s cut shot where Latham mistakenly canceled the bails was once again a clear indication of why Hardik was not out.

“Forget about split screens and replays, Shubman Gill’s cut shot proved why Hardik was clearly not out. #indvsnz,” Ashwin said on Twitter.

Former Indian national cricket team opening batsman Wasim Zafar also took to Twitter to explain how Hardik was robbed during the first ODI.

“1. Clear gaps between balls and bails. 2. Ball is inside gloves, bail is not lit yet. 3. Bales burns after brushing from gloves. Hardik robbed there. #INDvNZ,” said Zafar.
