With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy less than a month away, India have suffered a setback as Shreyas Iyer may miss the first two Tests due to a back injury. For the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand, the All-India Senior Selection Committee named Rajat Patidar as Iyer’s replacement. However, Iyer is likely to recover from his injury and feature in the Tests, but if he is absent, the selectors will have to search for his replacement.
Recently, some youngsters rocked the 2022-23 edition of Ranji Trophy with their incredible batting display. Looking at those performances, the selectors could give the 28-year-old a chance to fill the shoes in the upcoming match against the Aussies. In the ongoing domestic tournaments, these batsmen are constantly giving the bowlers headaches and it can be said that the chances of these players taking Iyer’s place are increasing rapidly.

3. Hanuma Bihari
In the last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2020, Hanuma Bihari Played a vital role in India’s historic victory. In the second innings of the third Test, he played a memorable unbeaten knock (23 off 161 balls) for the team. Along with Ravichandran Ashwin, he showed composure and put together an unbroken 62-run partnership that saved the match for India.
In July 2022, he played his last international match for India against England at Edgbaston. Last month, he missed the Test series in Bangladesh and was not named in the squad for the two Tests against Australia recently. However, Iyer is likely to make the team due to injury. His reliable batting stats also make him the favorite over Iyer.
In 28 innings of 16 international Test matches, Bihari scored 839 runs with one century and five fifties. Recently, he also participated in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy and scored 331 runs for Andhra Pradesh in 10 innings from six games including a half-century. Given his current form and convincing batting numbers, the selectors may show confidence in him instead of Iyer.
