‘I could literally write a book about you’: AB de Villiers praises retiring Hashim Amla in series of tweets

South Africa’s legendary batsman Hashim AmlaThe 39-year-old announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday. He scored 9282 runs in 124 Tests – second Jacques CallisScored 27 ODI centuries and amassed 18672 runs in the format for the Proteas.

Former cricketer AB de Villierswho made his international debut for South Africa with Amla in 2004, paid an emotional tribute to the retired cricketer.

Between 2004 and 2018, when de Villiers retired from international cricket, the pair shared 113 partnerships across three formats (Tests, ODIs and T20Is) and combined for 6,274 runs at an average of 57.55. No other South African pair has scored as many runs as Amla and de Villiers.

After retirement, Amla’s project will be a coaching stint MI Cape Town in Running SA20Where he will serve as batting coach.

De Villiers’ heartbreaking message for Amla:

“Hashim Amla.. where to start?! Not easy. It may take me days, weeks, months, years.

I could literally write a book about you.

Hmmm, thank you for always being by my side. You have always been a brother who has made me feel safe in so many ways.

Your journey has not been easy. “Man of Strange Tricks”. “She’ll never last”. “He will never be consistent”.

“But then, in your own very unique way, you went out there again and again and just batted as well as you could. Calm, secure, consistent, brave, efficient and humble, always for the team, for your country. You inspire me in ways I can’t explain.

So, today, I salute you my friend. You served the game to perfection! We can all learn from it. i did

I wish I could bat with you one more time.”
