How Shubman Gill sealed openers’ slot ahead of ODI World Cup

It’s only January 2023, but youngster Shubman Gill already seems to be enjoying a consistent run in ODI cricket with the bat for India.

With three centuries Maximum score is 208 (against New Zealand recently) Just goes to show how Shubman Gill is making the most of his opportunities.

Statistically speaking, the 23-year-old is almost reaching his 2022 run tally, when he scored 638 runs at an average of 70.88 in 12 ODIs. Last year though, Shubman recorded an ODI century of 130 against Zimbabwe in Harare.

This year alone, Shubman has registered scores of 21, 116 (against Sri Lanka), and 208, 40* and 112 (against New Zealand), which shows that he is not only peaking at the right time, it seems, in the ODI World Cup on home soil later this year. Earlier an opener’s slot was sealed.

Gill, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand in early 2019, enjoyed success as an opener in ODIs, scoring 1075 runs at an average of 82.69 in 17 matches.

This is even bigger than that of KL Rahul, who opened 23 times in ODIs for India and scored 915 runs at an average of 43.57. Notably, Rahul was absent from the recently concluded ODI series against the Black Caps after tying the knot with actress Athiya Shetty earlier this week.

Shubman’s pair with Rohit

Shubman seems to be enjoying a vital partnership at the top of the order with his captain Rohit Sharma. In the first ODI against the Kiwis, Shubman put on a 60-run stand with Rohit, and in the second there was a 72-run stand. The biggest stand between the two came in the third ODI, where the duo put together a mammoth stand of 212 runs to destroy the opposition.

Moreover, India are looking for that aggressive approach in batting, and Shubman Gill could have a big role to play in that, as he looks set to cement the openers’ slot for the ODI World Cup in India.

India’s next ODI challenge isn’t until March, when they play Australia at home in a three-match series, and the task is only going to get tougher for Shubman Gill. But, if the first two ODI series of 2023 are anything to go by, Punjab’s youngsters seem ready for the challenge, and this is just the beginning.
