Desert Vipers beat Abu Dhabi Knight Riders by 111 runs in the ninth match of the International League (ILT20) on Friday, 20 January at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. While this emphatic win makes the Vipers one of the firm favorites to win the competition, it leaves Abu Dhabi’s chances in a complete shambles and they will have to pull themselves together. Their overall net run rate suffered greatly after the socks.
Notably, Desert Vipers managed to register a comfortable seven-wicket win over Knight Riders with over two overs to spare in their opposite game. Even so far the team led by Colin Munro has done the job without breaking a sweat.
Abu Dhabi captain Sunil Narine won the toss and elected to bowl first. Although Andre Russell removed Rohan Mustafa in the first over, the Knight Riders’ joy was short-lived. Alex Hales and captain Colin Munro then took the attack to the bowlers and shell-shocked them with their amazing power-hitting ability.
The duo added 164 runs for the second wicket. While Munro scored 56 off 41 balls, it was Hales who stole the show with a brilliant century. His 110 off 59 balls took the Vipers to a mammoth total of 219/4. Only Lahiru Kumara (2/31) and Andre Russell (1/47) could make some impact with the ball for Abu Dhabi.
Desert Viper bowlers make easy work of the Abu Dhabi batters
In reply, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders lost the plot of this huge run chase from the word ‘go’ as none of their batters could get started. Desert Vipers bowlers are picking up wickets at regular intervals to keep a check on the runs.
The Knight Riders were able to cross the 100-run mark courtesy of Caribbean power-hitter Andre Russell. Nevertheless, once his spirited knock of 57 off 29 balls ended, Abu Dhabi were bundled out for 108 in the 16th over.
