Australian Open: Taylor Fritz lost to Alex Poperin© AFP
Eighth seed Taylor Fritz became the latest top name to crash out of the Australian Open on Thursday, ousted by wildcard local hope Alex Poperin, who was in tears at the end. American Fritz, who has a 2022 success with titles in Indian Wells, Tokyo and Eastbourne, fell in five tough sets at a lopsided John Cain Arena. Australia’s Poperine won 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-2.
The year-to-date Grand Slam has now lost three of its top 10 seeds before the third round, with Rafael Nadal and Casper Rudd also crashing out early.
“It’s a dream and I don’t want to wake up at all,” said Poperin, who equaled her best Grand Slam result and the crowd broke into tears as she chanted her name.
“Pre-season I put my head down and worked as hard as I could… I keep working. I like this feeling and I want more of this feeling.”
Fritz, who led the Australian Open to help the United States win the United Cup title, had never before lost to a player as low as No. 113 Poperine at Melbourne Park.
