Although Bianca Belaire won the 30-woman Royal Rumble match in 2021, she was not Vince McMahon’s first choice. Instead, she wanted to go with Charlotte Flair, who had won the match the year before.
This is according to former WWE writer Chris Dunn. speaking on Public Enemy PodcastDan shared why things have changed:
“I was in a hotel room in Tampa and we were watching some kind of football game and an assistant left the Royal Rumble (2021) the night before the meeting and they changed the finish and Charlotte. [Flair] Going over and they were rehearsing Charlotte and Bianca [Belair] was going to drop like midway through the match and it turned into Bianca and I think a lot of people voiced it but this guy, Ryan Ward, he’s been there for 14 years, he was [John] Sina was the author and probably, for my money, I think had the biggest hand in the women’s revolution.”
“He was the head writer with Kevin in the golden days of NXT [Owens] and Sami [Zayn] And the four horse lady, all that stuff. From my understanding, from what I heard, he told Vince McMahon something like, ‘Vince, if you watch the Royal Rumble tomorrow, you’ve got Edge winning and Charlotte winning. We’re not making any new stars’ and I think that really resonated and Bianca was on a roll where it kind of made sense and she had to, again, right after that match, really nail the post-match promo and she did it and He was just awesome and awesome.”
