The Boston Bruins moved to #1
The best team in the NHL is now the best team in our rankings. They advanced in all four categories thanks to strong years from David Krejci, Jake DeBrusk, Hampus Lindholm and Linus Ullmark. We thought the Bruins would be good, but no this well Led by Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy, they look like an unbeatable force every night.
The flame falls
The Flames haven’t really impressed on the ice this season, so they’ve fallen five spots in our rankings. Adding a true top-six winger and a rebounding Jacob Markstrom should help them climb back up our rankings. Jonathan Huberdeau and Andrew Mangiapane returning to their 2021-22 form will help them even more.
Biggest Risers
The Golden Knights were our biggest risers, up nine spots. This has been due to a number of factors, including the play of Jake Eichel and Chandler Stephenson, a formidable defensive team, and better than expected goaltending. Josh Morrissey and the Jets also moved up nine spots, as everyone played better than last year. Kyle Connor is still a stud, Pierre-Luc Dubois is playing his best hockey, Morrissey Norris is in contention and Connor Hellebuyck looks like the old Hellebuyck.
Goaltending was a stumbling block for the Maple Leafs in our preseason rankings. However, Kyle Dubas’ gamble has paid off so far, and it’s jumped them seven places. The Stars also moved up seven spots as young players like Jake Oettinger and Jason Robertson took more steps to be among the league’s best, and veterans like Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin had resurgent seasons. The Sabers moved up six spots thanks to standout seasons from both Taz Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin.
The biggest faller
The Oilers are our biggest letdowns due to Zach Campbell’s rough start and very poor defense. I have no doubt they will fix things and get back to the team we saw in the 2021-22 playoffs. Last year was a ton of career years for Hunter and they just weren’t the same. Fortunately, they still have the best goaltending and defensive group in the league. An opposite thing is happening with the blues, who move to the same places as the hunters. Their offense has been mostly fine except for Ryan O’Reilly, a down year, but the defensive group and Jordan Binnington have struggled. The Penguins dropped from the number one team in our preseason rankings to number seven due to a poor season with their wingers and defense.
Playoff picture
Our combined rankings yield the following playoff picture:
- Pacific Division: Golden Knights (9th), Flames (11th), Oilers (15th)
- Central Division: Avalanche (5th), Jets (11th), Stars (14th), Wild (16th), Predators (17th)
- Metropolitan Division: Hurricanes (3rd), Rangers (4th), Penguins (7th), Capitals (8th), Islanders (10th)
- Atlantic Division: Bruins (1st), Lightning (2nd), Maple Leafs (5th)
Battle for the bottom
The Blackhawks were 32nd in our rankings to begin with and remain there midway through the season. They suck. But it’s all in hopes of landing Connor Bedard. The Ducks fell seven spots to 31st, as they were awful in every aspect. The Blue Jackets dropped four spots to 30th. Probably a big part due to injuries and underperformance, but they’ve got a bright future. Canadians, coyotes and sharks also swim near the bottom. See what I did there?
